mandatory
「義務」「義務化」で一番よく聞く単語はmandatoryだと思います。mandatoryは法律や国や地域、組織、団体の決まりのレベルで要求される義務です。
The company has made it mandatory for all employees to attend a learning course every three years.
(会社は３年ごとに全ての社員にラーニングコースに参加するのを義務付けている)
mandatoryと一緒にmakeをよく使います。
Wearing a helmet when riding a motorcycle is mandatory.
(オートバイに乗るときにヘルメットを被ることは義務化されている)
compulsory
compulsoryはmandatoryとほぼ同じ意味で、言い換えることもできると思います。法律や権威のある団体などからの命令などでやらなければならないことを指します。「義務教育」という場合にcompulsory educationと言います。
In Japan, people take twelve years of compulsory education.
(日本では、12年の義務教育を受けます)
English is compulsory for all students.
(英語は全ての生徒の必須科目です)
obligatory
obligatoryもmandatoryやcompulsoryと言い換え可能だと思います。意味も同じです。These days, it is obligatory for all people to wear face mask here.
(最近、ここにいる全ての人にマスクを義務化しています)
